Big Spaceship has expanded its leadership with the arrivals of Tim Ferris as head of analytics and Harry Garcia as executive design director.

Ferris will be tasked with growing the independent, Brooklyn-based digital agency’s data offering, utilizing analytics to uncover cultural insights to drive client marketing and product development. In the role, he will work closely with chief strategy officer Andrea Ring, who joined the agency from R/GA back in 2015.

Ferris also arrives at Big Spaceship from R/GA where he had served as director of marketing services since September 2014, led the network’s APAC-area analytics practice and worked with clients including Nike, Samsung, Google, MasterCard and Volvo. He previously held strategic and analytical roles at other major agencies such as Arnold and DigitasLBi.

“For us data isn’t just a strategic input, but a creative one as well,” Big Spaceship founder and CEO Michael Lebowitz said in a statement. “A modern agency must break down the traditional walls between data and ideas and Tim brings the skills and knowledge to do that.”

“Our main role is to use data to generate insights,” Ferris added. “However, it’s not enough to rely solely on data, as there’s only so much it can tell you before you start to wonder why things are happening.”

Garcia joins Big Spaceship from Mullen Lowe Profero New York, where he served as head of design and oversaw teams working with clients such as Diageo, Kaiser Permanente, Accenture, Con Edison and The New York Times. He joined the Profero network after it acquired his former employer, the Latino-focused Vox Collective, in 2012.

“Harry’s going to help us build on what has become a world-class design system,” Big Spaceship president Rob Thorsen said, calling the new hire “as much a story-teller as he is a brilliant designer.”

Garcia stated that his own interest in Big Spaceship “goes back many years,” adding. “It’s always been impressive to me. I’m really looking forward to bringing our clients into the design process, orchestrating a design practice that gives brands a reason to believe as much as we do.”

Big Spaceship’s client roster currently includes YouTube, Google Play and Maps, Purina and documentarian Ken Burns, among others.
