Leo Burnett named a new chief strategy officer in its Chicago office today. Emma Montgomery will take on the role, joining the North America team after leading communications planning and brand strategy at Leo Burnett Sydney.

She will report to North America CEO Andrew Swinand and manage a team of 40.

“Emma is like the ultimate cross-trained athlete,” Swinand said. “As you live in an omnichannel world, you need cross-trained athletes that have perspective and understanding of all of these things and can actually use human insight to create an integrated idea that emotionally connects with consumers. Emma is the decathlete of cross-trained athletes.”

In her new role, Montgomery said she will work hand in hand with John Lowell, head of Leo Burnett’s relatively new data and analytics division, The Core.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to create a really good grounding for creative product through the design of fantastic strategy born out of really deep understating through data,” Montgomery said.

During her time in Sydney, Montgomery worked on the “Cheers to a Legend” campaign for Diageo’s Bundaberg Rum & Cola. Before joining the agency, she spent over 12 years at Starcom in various roles.

Added Swinand: “We have incredible creative talent … for me, Emma is just really rounding out the team as someone who can take data and analytics and turn it into a beautiful, human insight.”
