This Agency Recreated Pulp Fiction’s Notorious Gimp Scene to Promote Portfolio Night

There are easier ways to promote your work

It's not for the faint of heart. The One Club

Love it or hate it, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction is now part of the contemporary film cannon—and few scenes inspire more fear and loathing than “bring out the Gimp.”

Two Australian agency executives are promoting their country’s edition of the One Club Portfolio Night in Perth on May 23 in a slightly disturbing way—by recreating the glimpse into an underworld of violent S&M that seared itself into the minds of so many impressionable ’90s viewers.

Executive creative directors Marcus Tesoriero (of The Brand Agency) and Paul Coghlan (of J. Walter Thompson) play the roles made famous by Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames with a pair of “deranged creative students” holding them hostage and demanding that they review the portfolios in question.

For those unfamiliar with the practice, Portfolio Night is an opportunity for young creatives to have their work evaluated by elder statesmen ready to crown up-and-coming talent. And it’s far healthier than whatever’s happening below.

“Portfolio Night is a fantastic opportunity to pass on advice to the next generation of enthusiastic creatives, so when we were asked to promote the night, there was no holding back when it came to the scripts,” said Tesoriero, whose agency created the short in partnership with production company King Street.

Tesoriero explained that “for a bit of fun,” the team challenged themselves to recreate “one of Tarantino’s most famous scenes ever.”

“On virtually zero budget, I was amazed with what the team pulled together in just a few short days,” he added. “The message is loud and clear, so I’m confident it will get the attention of the up-and-coming Perth creative community to come and take part.”

Let’s hope, for the sake of all involved, that the event itself is a bit less intense than this (thankfully fictional) preview.
