Ad of the Day: From the Star Wars Universe, a New Tale of Betrayal and Heartbreak

Old Republic expansion gets a stunning trailer

With most Star Wars trailers, the challenge is to build excitement without spoiling too much of the story. But a bigger challenge is creating a trailer that tells an entire story unto itself.

California-based Blur Studio proves it is once again up to such an ambitious task of CGI storytelling with "Betrayed," an incredible, six-minute trailer for the upcoming "Knights of the Eternal Throne" expansion to the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO video game.

It's truly an undersell to even call the video a trailer, when in fact it's a short film that holds its own regardless of your interest in the game it's promoting. Check it out:

Of course, the heartbreaking division of families is nothing new to the Star Wars universe. In fact, it's practically a trope of the franchise, from Luke and Vader to Han Solo and Kylo Ren.

But rather than feeling like well-trodden ground, "Betrayed" instead builds on the personal narratives of Star Wars by introducing us to a new family that predates the movie protagonists by about 3,600 years. Clearly times change, but when the Force is in play, family dynamics remain eternally deadly.

Blur Studio has been raising the bar for such promotional videos in recent years, creating a similarly soaring trailer for League of Legends in 2014 and visual spectacles in 2016 for Halo Wars 2 and Atlas Reactor.
