The Time for Contactless Payment in America Has Arrived

People want to walk into a store, grab what they need, then walk out

If there ever was a time when U.S. shoppers might be willing to adopt contactless payments on a widespread scale, that moment is now.

America has, for years, not kept pace with much of the world on this front. Consider that almost 60% of all face-to-face Visa transactions made in nations other than the U.S. are contactless, and the number of these payments increased 40% from 2019 to 2020.

During Adweek’s NexTech 2020 Virtual Summit, Visa’s Olabisi Boyle, vice president of connected commerce, chatted with Adweek’s creativity and innovation editor David Griner about smart mirrors, emerging cloud technology and a world where everyone can exchange money via their smartphone.

As Boyle put it, people desire to walk into a store, grab what they need, then walk out (while still paying, of course). Some aspects of this scenario are beginning to appear as a consequence of the pandemic. And once the habit starts to form, there’s no going back.

“The work that we do in connected commerce has become quite timely for helping our consumers be more resilient in the time when we don’t want to touch anything,” she said.
