Burger King has gone viral once again with a bus ad that puts the heat on Westminster politicians in the U.K.
Placed on the side of a red London bus by global creative agency BBH, the ad is simple, but quite direct indeed: “Another Whopper on the side of a bus. Must be an election.”
The ad references Vote Leave’s notorious Brexit campaign bus ad, which claimed that the U.K. sends £350 million (over $458 million) to the EU—a statement that U.K. Statistics Authority chairman Sir David Nosgrove has dubbed a “clear misuse” of official figures.
Considering that “whopper” can mean a “gross or blatant lie,” the ad appears to call out Prime Minister Boris Johnson as a liar.
“This is how advertising is meant to work,” said BBH chief creative officer Ian Heartfield in a statement. “Phil [Holbrook] and Stu [Royall] came up with a killer idea, a brave client didn’t hesitate to approve it, we got it made and out onto the streets in next to no time, [and] the nation started talking about it. Job done.”
While Brexit is a particularly contentious area into which few brands have dared to foray, this isn’t the first time Burger King has got political with its ads. Last year, the brand tackled net neutrality by making real customers wait longer for Whoppers.
