For the first time in 83 years, Krispy Kreme fanatics won’t have to visit one of the doughnut chain’s elusive signature green-roofed outposts to get their glaze fix. Finally, something sweet has happened in 2020.
Starting today, the saccharine confections will be available for purchase in bite-sized form at all Walmart locations nationwide. By July, Krispy Kreme Doughnut Bites and Mini Crullers will make their way to Walmart’s online grocery aisles.
Though the coffeehouse franchise has nearly 1,400 retail locations in 33 countries, many states in the U.S. had the misfortune of losing their access to a freshly baked hot dozen when the company went public in 2000 and—until Krispy Kreme went private again in 2016—shuttered unprofitable stores to avoid bankruptcy.
“For over 80 years, fans all across America have asked us to bring the great taste of Krispy Kreme to their neighborhood,” said David Skena, chief marketing officer at Krispy Kreme said in a statement. “Now, with the help of our partners at Walmart we are able to do just that.”
Krispy Kreme Doughnut Bites will be offered in original glazed, chocolate and apple cinnamon flavors for $3.97 per box. Each Bites box will have five sleeves of four doughnut holes. Krispy Kreme Mini Crullers will be offered in original glazed and blueberry flavors, sold in a 12 ounce box ($3.88) or a box of eight crullers ($3.97).
Seasonal flavors will also be available for purchase, starting with strawberry doughnut bites and lemon crullers this summer. More seasonal flavors will be rolled out later this year.
The partnership between the hypermarket corporation and the dessert company will kick off with a virtual grand opening on Wednesday, June 24 at 7 p.m. Krispy Kreme will digitally welcome guests to join in celebrating the occasion with virtual games and surprise celebrity appearances. Forty virtual grand opening guests will also have the chance to win free doughnuts for a year.
