Highlights the danger of not having insurance

Not having health insurance can mean taking a big financial hit for even minor medical procedures. That’s the theme of Aflac’s current advertising strategy, and of its pre-Super Bowl spot, which will air after the National Anthem and before the Big Game on Fox.

In the 30-second ad created by Publicis Seattle with placement by Mediavest|Spark, a patient is getting ready for surgery. But because he doesn’t have Aflac’s insurance, the surgeon tells him she’s not only going to remove his gallbladder, but also take away his prized ’67 Corvette. The Aflac duck mascot also makes an appearance in the spot.

“We are excited to demonstrate the value of Aflac’s products and services to an audience that is likely to top 110 million people, the largest that has ever witnessed the debut of an Aflac Duck commercial,” said Aflac svp and CMO Gail Galuppo in a statement.

Aflac will also air its current spot, “Ski Patrol,” during the pregame show on Fox. Aflac debuted that campaign last fall, and it targets millennials, 62 percent of which have less than $1,000 on hand for out-of-pocket medical expenses, the company found. In the ad, a skier breaks his leg, and the medics tell him it’s a “real moving-back-in-with-the-parents” situation.
