StubHub, “Tiger in a Hot Tub”

After 11 years in business, StubHub is finally launching its first-ever national ad campaign. Naturally, it’s picked one of the busiest times of the year for tickets—with a dense sports schedule over the next few months, and the summer concert season not far off. Several new TV spots play off the notion of finding your “dream tickets.” This is presented literally, as men and women drift through dreamscapes as they imagine being at the perfect concert or game. In the spot here, a group of female friends stumble upon a rock ‘n’ roll wonderland full of flaming guitars and dashing long-haired rockers who rub the ladies’ feet and welcome them into their tiger-infested hot tubs. A second spot shows guys in a baseball fantasy, making snow angels in piles of hot dogs and floating on giant nacho chips in seas of cheese. “Scoring your dream tickets is no longer a fantasy,” says the voiceover in each spot, as we see the friends, back in reality, ordering tickets on the computer—but with one member of the group still acting out the fantasy. The setup/payoff couldn’t be more hokey, but the images are amusing enough—particularly in a third spot, which features a guy dragging giant binoculars to an event because he’s stuck with crappy seats. Creatively speaking, these ads might not be right up front in the orchestra section, but they get StubHub in the game. —Tim Nudd
