Valentine Departs Southwest For Pace Warehouses

DALLAS – Southwest Airlines here said last week that it would not replace marketing vp Don Valentine, who left the company Dec. 31 to join Pace Membership Warehouses in Englewood, Colo.
Colleen Barrett, executive vp of customers at Southwest and the person to whom Valentine reported, said she will turn over his responsibilities to two existing executives – promotion/advertising director Joyce Rogge and marketing/sales director Dave Ridley. Rogge already works with Southwest ad agencies GSD&M, Austin, and Cramer-Krasselt/Chicago as well as buying shop Camelot Communications. Southwest’s annual billings are estimated at $25 million.
Barrett, who will continue to oversee marketing, said that Southwest’s ceo Herb Kelleher is also closely involved in the company’s marketing efforts.
Valentine, who is senior vp/marketing and strategic planning at Pace, a chain of warehouse stores, said advertising is handled on a project basis, and it’s too early to tell if changes are in order.
Valentine is credited with helping steer Southwest into major-carrier status.
