AT&T Ads Cast Merger With T-Mobile as Jobs Creator

AT&T is in the fight of its life to keep its $39 billion merger with T-Mobile alive. As the Department of Justice's suit against the merger gets under way (the trial begins Feb. 13), AT&T launched a TV ad Wednesday on Washington, D.C., news programs, and a print ad earlier in the week in the Washington Post and local Capitol Hill publications, saying the merger will lead to more U.S. jobs. "With the planned merger with T-Mobile, AT&T will begin to bring 5,000 jobs to America from overseas," the ads say. "This investment will create as many as 96,000 American jobs." The ads will surely infuriate Sprint, which commissioned and released a study that suggested the merger could actually eliminate between 34,000 and 60,000 jobs. AT&T's numbers, released the day before Sprint's, were based on a May 31 analysis from the Economic Policy Institute, a D.C. think tank whose board of directors includes the president of the Communications Workers of America, the union that stands to gain from the merger. Yes, there's no love lost between the two sides, but at least they've stopped with the transphobia.
