Here’s What You Get When An AI Makes a Super Bowl Ad Bingo Card

Adweek's Super Bowl Bot thinks you should look out for 'patriotic veal' and 'dads gathering'

Now that Adweek’s Super Bowl ad-pitching bot has processed nearly 4,500 descriptions of Big Game commercials, we thought it might have some insight into common tropes to expect during the high-stakes commercial breaks this Sunday.

So we had the AI generate a couple dozen squares for a hypothetical game of Super Bowl ad bingo, drawing on the thousands of ads in its training dataset, a handful of real Super Bowl ad bingo cards to give it a sense of the format, and the millions of websites fed to the underlying neural network—a cutting-edge text generation model called GPT-2.

As usual, the AI’s ideas are…unconventional, to say the least. While some squares might be legitimately playable—”the nation is divided,” “Star Wars,” maybe even “dads gathering”—you’d be a bit harder-pressed to check off “patriotic veal” or “snark chicken,” whatever those may mean.

In any case, if you feel that there’s a strong chance of a commercial featuring Brett Favre wearing a turban during a pregnancy test this Sunday, then we have the party game for you.
