KFC (fueled by its agency, Wieden + Kennedy Portland) has become known in recent years for its rather zany creations, such as a training-oriented VR escape room simulator, an animatronic colonel at the drive-through and even a romance novel starring Colonel Sanders himself.
As W+K’s Cannes Lions presentation about its KFC work put it: “Stupidity is our strength.”
But now the brand and its agency need your help making their most ambitious and ridiculous ideas come to life.
The KFC Innovations Lab was launched this week as a crowdfounding effort on Indiegogo so that fan dollars can decide which projects get the next green light.
Currently available for potential backers: A “Little Colonel Tracker” necktie, a cardboard “Picnic With the Colonel” kit, a “Kentucky Fried Hot Tub,” a “Smart Cane Remote” and an ice-skating show called “Colonel on Ice.”
Here’s a video explaining the project and introducing you to the potential creations it could unleash on the world:
“KFC was founded with the spirit of innovation–the Colonel’s patented pressure-frying process, bucket packaging, and his secret blend of 11 herbs and spices took the world by storm,” says Steve Kelly, KFC U.S. director of media and digital marketing, in a statement about the initiative. “With the launch of KFC Innovations Lab, non-Colonels can now be part of that process and support important projects such as a hot tub that looks like a bucket of fried chicken, so we can keep focusing on making actual buckets of fried chicken.”
Backers will, in true crowdfunding style, earn bonus perks in the form of branded swag: KFC Innovations Lab sweatpants, T-shirts or a 3-D puffy sticker pack, while supplies last. Contributions to any projects that don’t get funded will be refunded, but the aspiring backers will lose out on the swag.
