Shaquille O’Neal and Oreo Share a Birthday Today. Here’s How They’re Celebrating

What do Shaquille O’Neal and Oreo cookies have in common?

For one, they’re both soft around the middle. (That’s cool, Shaq, just more of you to love.) They also share a birthday. And it’s today, March 6. Happy National Oreo Day!

To celebrate, the NBA icon visits his hometown of Atlanta this afternoon to hand out free Oreo Chocolate Candy Bars. You’ll find him at Atlantic Station in the “Snack Shaq.” The playhouse/pop-up structure was customized with a sunroof so that 7-foot-1 Shaq can rise above it all.

It’s all part of a promotion the brand devised with 360i to give away 1 million free bars via

“We liked the idea of going beyond the original Oreo cookie to demonstrate our delicious versatility,” Sam Greenwood, senior director equity and innovation for Oreo Chocolate, tells AdFreak. “Shaq has been a part of the Oreo family for years, so we’ve actually always known that we share a birthday. This year seemed like the right time to celebrate together.”

Along with today’s live event, the big guy appears in a series of clips on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with tons of candy bars for co-stars:

“For this shoot, he played a prank on one of his agents who was on set, pretending to get over-the-top mad, which got a big reaction from the crew because he’s known for being so easy-going,” Greenwood says.

Heh, such a kidder. Wonder how many Oreo bars his new SoCal shack can hold?
