LONDON—As the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 spreads around the world, Europe has found itself the current center of the outbreak. And while Italy, France and Spain have essentially been in lockdown for weeks, until Monday the U.K. was not.
Concerned by the extent to which their fellow Londoners had been moving around relatively freely, three creatives at agency Pablo London created a series of posters telling people to stay home.
Nathalie Gordon, Amy Fasey and Jacob Hellström said they were horrified to see Britain just “carrying on,” so the three put their heads together to create four posters in a single day.
On Monday night, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a series of strict measures preventing people from leaving their houses, unless for necessities. But until then, photos of packed beaches and parks had been circulating online, with people left increasingly concerned that others weren’t taking self-isolation seriously.
“Given the lack of advertising the government has been doing to get the U.K. to understand the severity of what is happening and quite simply explain the importance of staying inside we decided to do it ourselves,” Nathalie Gordon told Adweek.
“We made a series of posters and were in the process of getting them printed to guerrilla all over London where people were gathering,” Gordon said, “but as the lockdown was all but imposed last night, we decided to just put them out on the internet instead for people to share and hopefully help gently shame their friends into action.”
The digital posters read: “Save a life, stay on the sofa,” “Be a hero, don’t leave the house,” “Keep Britain going, go nowhere,” and “Stay alive, stay in bed.”
“They are simple but hopefully pack a punch. And their message universal—not exclusive just to the U.K.,” Gordon said.
