You can now explore the depths of Westworld from your living room, kitchen, bathroom, wherever—as long as you have your Amazon Echo nearby and within earshot. All you have to say is, “Alexa, open Westworld.”
Today, HBO announced the debut of its new Alexa skill, called Westworld: The Maze. It’s designed specifically for fans of the show to play on their various Amazon voice devices, just in time for the show’s upcoming Season 2 finale this Sunday. HBO partnered with agency 360i and Westworld production team Kilter Films on the project.
The Maze is a choose-your-own-adventure game with over 60 storylines, 400 possible choices for players to make and roughly two hours of game time in which Westworld fans can immerse themselves. Fans will recognize the voices of characters from the show, including Jeffrey Wright as Bernard and Angela Sarafyan as Clementine, as they dive into this mystical world.
“Voice is the next frontier of interactive storytelling, with a powerful ability as a marketing tool to deepen engagement with our fan bases,” said Sabrina Caluori, svp, digital and social marketing at HBO, in a statement. “We’re excited to launch our first voice initiative as a Westworld story extension that we hope will surprise and delight our viewers.”
This game isn’t for just anyone. According to HBO’s statement, it will take a true fan of the show to make it all the way to the center of the maze. From start to finish, a game should take you about 20 minutes—if you can stay alive long enough to make it to the end.
Players enter the game as a host (a term from the show meaning an android of sorts designed for Westworld) on the hunt for their consciousness. The clip below gives you a taste of Level 3 of the game from Delos Lab.
The Alexa game is a nice way to keep fans engaged with the show, even after the season finale airs. HBO has done similar immersive experiences in the past, like the massive takeover at SXSW where fans could visit a recreated version of Sweetwater, the world within Westworld. Now fans all over (who have access to Alexa) finally have the chance to immerse themselves into the mystery.
