The estimated world population is about 6.8 billion people. Qualcomm estimates that just under 15% of us are 3G wireless data subscribers as of mid-March:
They quote an estimate from Wireless Intelligence that the number of 3G subscribers will reach 2.8 billion by 2014. Assuming the world’s population grows linearly at a 1.14% growth rate between now and 2014, the world’s population should be around 7.1 billion. This works out to a bit under 40% of the world’s population in 2014.
This seems like an awfully large percentage of the world paying a monthly 3G data subscription given today’s economic state. But, stranger things have happened. Stay tuned until 2014 when we’ll revisit this prediction. I placed an alarm in Google calendar with this blog’s contents to remind me about the prediction 🙂
