Although blogs like this one often talk about mobile technology in terms of “play” and “toys”, we realize that the mobile phone revolution continues to have a huge impact on society and culture. This Reuters story noted some very interesting statistics gathered by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics (part of the Centers for Disease Control).
Adults in the U.S. continue to untether themselves from wired phones in a big way:
– 24.5% (also reported as 23% later in the article) of adults only have cell phones
– Almost 50% of adults in the 25 to 29 year old range only have a cell phone
– 14.9% of U.S. homes (which could have more than one person) have a wired phone that is rarely or never used
I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the number of wireless-only adults in the U.S. passes 50% in my lifetime.
