On May 23, Mediaweek’s Lucia Moses reported that the American Society of Magazine Editors said that advertising in the May issue of Shape seemed to violate ASME’s editorial guidelines.
Diane Newman, evp, group publishing director of the Active and Healthy Lifestyle Group at Shape parent American Media Inc., provided the following response to the story:
I feel that my telephone conversation with you regarding the Ellen DeGeneres/May issue of Shape was not fairly or accurately conveyed in your article.
I wish to go on the record to say that my quote was taken out of context. My intention was to differentiate how the cover and inside edit were in fact unrelated to the Vitamin Water [sic] ad. In no way should my quotes have been used to validate or suggest that AMI did anything wrong.
In fact, I don’t believe that we did anything wrong and the full context of my interview would have supported this.
