Android Phones Selling 100K Units Per Day. But, Where's the Paid App Story?

Verizon’s relentless promoting of the Motorola Droid last Fall really kickstarted sales for all Android phones. Sales went from 30K units per day in 2009 to 60K per day earlier this year. According to this report from TechCrunch, Google claims daily unit sales are now at 100K clip.

The 50K apps number is less interesting that it might appear. The problem is that there is no real market for paid Android apps yet. While there are paid Android apps, none have emerged as a must-have killer app that everyone talks about. Every app on my Droid and Nexus One, for example, are free apps.

Google is doing a great job with Android as a platform. But, it needs to rethink its app ecosystem.
