Fabricated tweet claims President Obama injured in White House explosions

Around 1 p.m. today, hackers gained access to the AP's verified Twitter account and posted a fabricated tweet reading, "Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured."

The AP suspended its Twitter account within minutes, according to The New York Times, and announced that it had been hacked. White House press secretary Jay Carney reaffirmed that no attack had occurred and the president was unharmed.

"We are working with Twitter to sort this out," AP spokesperson Paul Colford said in a blog post. As of 3 p.m., the AP's account remains suspended.

Immediately following the false tweet, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 140 points, a loss that was immediately recouped.
