Beyonce’s Surprise Album Sparked More Than 5,300 Tweets Per Minute

Beyonce’s surprise album drop on Friday generated not only a massive amount of downloads and traffic for iTunes, the sole source for Queen B’s fifth record, but also an insane level of buzz on Twitter.

Mashable reports that the news generated 1.2 million tweets in less than 12 hours.

That’s more than 5,300 tweets per minute, at its peak — higher than Sharknado’s record (5,000 tweets per minute).

The most tweeted song was “Blue,” written about Beyonce and Jay Z’s daughter Blue Ivy.

This is despite the fact that Beyonce is verified on Twitter, with 13 million followers – but only 8 tweets! Her social media base is on Facebook rather than Twitter, not uncommon among celebrities.

On Facebook, mentions of “Beyonce” spiked more than 1,300% in the hours after the album was released.
