The World Applauds Bob Dylan

Newspaper front pages, magazine covers and Vegas, baby.

A sign outside the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, where Bob Dylan and his band played Thursday ahead of their encore performance tonight at Desert Trip, offered congratulations to the icon for his Nobel Prize for Literature. The New Yorker tipped next week’s cover, an illustration by London-based French illustrator Malika Favre.

And today, the Las Vegas Sun is relaying praise from magician Penn Jillette:

“None of us were surprised that Bob won the Nobel Prize—I’ve been saying he should win it for 20 years, but I knew he had been on the short list for the past five years,” Jillette said. “I was thrilled to pieces.”

Jillette, the longtime performer who is friends with Dylan’s manager Jeff Rosen, said in a phone interview from his Las Vegas home that he was to see the award-winning musician and poet later in the evening at the Cosmopolitan.

“The night you win the Nobel Prize is the night you need to be playing on the stage in a casino in Vegas, don’t you think?” he asked.

Per AP, Dylan made no mention on stage last night at the Cosmopolitan of his Nobel win. But you can bet Mick Jagger will tonight at Desert Trip, when The Rolling Stones follow Dylan onstage. Jagger shared all kinds of playful banter last Friday during the event’s first weekend and is certain to make a wink-reference or two about now having a Nobel Prize winner as his lead-in.
