Bonnier Picks Up Parenting Title Conceive

In a week where Condé Nast shuttered parenting magazine Cookie, rival magazine publisher Bonnier Corp. is beefing up its parenting portfolio with the purchase of Conceive magazine.

The formerly independently published magazine — founded by Kim Hahn in 2004 — will join Bonnier’s other magazines in the category, Parenting and Babytalk. Conceive‘s entire staff will be joining the Bonnier team, and the magazine’s Web site, Conceive On-Air radio show and several related books are also part of the deal.

This new addition to the Bonnier family is surprising, especially considering what other companies like Condé are doing. Instead of folding titles, Bonnier has been collecting them, even ones within the same category. This is the company’s fourth acquisition in the past year. In June, the Florida-based publisher bought five enthusiast titles from Hachette Filipacchi, including Popular Photography, Flying, Boating, Sound & Vision and American Photo.

Bonnier Corp. Acquires Conceive Magazine — Adds to Portfolio that Includes Parenting and Babytalk

New York, NY — Bonnier Corp., publisher of Parenting and Babytalk, today announced the purchase of Conceive magazine. Known for its comprehensive information on getting pregnant, Conceive joins Bonnier’s two leading brands in the mom market, Parenting and Babytalk, to form the industry’s most complete portfolio reaching mothers and moms-to-be.

This is Bonnier Corp.’s fourth acquisition in the past 12 months. In June, Bonnier added five magazine titles from Hachette Filipacchi: Popular Photography, Flying, Boating, Sound & Vision and American Photo. And late last year, the company bought Working Mother and Scuba Diving in two separate deals.

“Adding Conceive will provide greater breadth to our targeted mom portfolio, anchored by Parenting and Babytalk,” says Terry Snow, CEO of Bonnier Corp. “Conceive provides us with a unique entry point to the mom marketplace and fits in our overall strategy to expand Bonnier’s opportunities in growth markets through multimedia platforms.”

Hahn founded Conceive in 2004. A former bank executive, she was frustrated with the lack of mainstream information available when she and her husband were trying to conceive. After the couple adopted a baby girl and Kim returned to work, she decided to leave banking and start a magazine to provide information to others navigating the quest to get pregnant.
