Boston Globe Editor Brian McGrory: ‘A City, A Nation Turned to Us, And We Delivered’

Sound the bugles — Boston Globe editor Brian McGrory just sent out his Gen. Patton-like email to his ink-stained wretches in the trenches.

“Please be very proud of what this great news organization did yesterday — and will continue to do in the coming days,” he wrote in the memo, obtained by FishbowlNY. “A city, a nation turned to us, and we delivered.”

McGrory’s gift of gab is not far off from that of his predecessor, Marty Baron, who left five months ago to become executive editor of the Washington Post.

Baron was known for his eloquent praise whenever the Globe‘s staff was called to arms for special coverage of storms, disasters and breaking news.

It’s tough to know where to begin with the discussion of yesterday’s performance. Start with Steve Silva and John Tlumacki. When the bombs went off, they headed toward the danger, capturing video and still images that were flashed around the world and anxiously devoured by our readers and viewers. They were haunting images, raw and graphic, the work of two fearless pros devoted to their news organization and to their craft. There’s David Abel, just feet from the first explosion, with the wherewithal to turn in a masterful first-hand account.

Some Globe reporters finished running the race, picked up pens, and reported on the catastrophe. The entire Metro staff worked like a symphony, under the most trying conditions, with a mainbar packed with fresh information, deep perspective, and vivid color, and a sweeping, probing package of must-read stories from the scene, the hospitals, and the investigation. We were ahead of the competition on every important front and, as important, we showed restraint on reporting the false rumors that many other organizations couldn’t resist. Sports, also, performed magnificently.

The commentary was superb. The graphics, in print and online, gave a critical understanding of events. It’s impossible to imagine a team of photographers performing any better. The design of the paper, from the front page through sports, exuded the history that unfolded. Our video operation showed just how much of a multimedia operation we’ve become. Steve’s video alone was viewed 4.5 million times online.

In that vein, a special nod as well to the and staffs, who managed stunning sites amid an avalanche of traffic.

The editing, at every level, from the planning through the word-smithing, was a textbook example of grace under extreme deadline pressure.
