Boston Globe Owner Launches Health News Site

Say hello to Stat.

Screen Shot 2015-11-04 at 8.54.29 AMJohn Henry, who purchased The Boston Globe in 2013, has a new venture on his hands: A health news site named Stat.

Stat is edited by Rick Berke, who previously served as assistant managing editor of the Times and executive editor of Politico. The site employs 40 staffers, all separate from the Globe. The Stat team is located in New York, San Francisco and Washington.

Berke told the Times that while health news attracts plenty of consumer eyeballs, Stat is designed to reach medical and science professionals.

“We want it to appeal to a broad audience,” said Berke. “But we also want it to be credible and informative to people in the world of science and medicine. There is a real vacuum in the coverage, and a real opportunity for us.”

“Over the coming decades, many of the most important stories in the world will come out of life sciences,” wrote Henry, in a post on Stat. “Our mission is to uncover and follow the biggest stories rising out of this sector. Major, untold stories will unfold on our site, as we examine issues and questions that affect every human being. There is simply not enough coverage presently of these vital matters.”
