Say Hello to Hayo Magazine

A winner at last night's inaugural Canadian Magazine Awards

Expanded from online to print in 2016, it is among the first Canadian Magazine Award winners.

The first issue of Hayo, a bi-annual Canadian print magazine launched in 2016, had a theme of “South.” The second and most recent issue was focused on “East.”

Last night, at the first annual Magazine Grands Prix awards (a.k.a. Canadian Magazine Awards) presented in Toronto and held in conjunction with MagNet: Canada’s Magazine Conference, Hayo won the prize of Best Niche/Special Interest Magazine. It is one of two independent publications launched in Canada last year that was honored; the other, Montreal’s Dinette magazine, won Best Food and Beverage Magazine. From the Hayo website:

Hayo is a coffee-table magazine for travelers curious about arts, culture and photography. A magazine for creative souls, we uncover the heart and soul of a place by sharing stories and images from people who have experienced it firsthand, offering fresh perspectives of popular and unknown locations.

First as an online magazine, Hayo now produces two print issues every year, published in Vancouver by Hayo Publishing Studio, a creative studio offering comprehensive publishing services to organizations and brands looking to venture into the art of print.

Each issue, which we’ve perused and highly recommend, retails for $16 U.S. Another award, for Best General Interest Story, was given posthumously to John Hofsess for his Toronto Life magazine piece about assisted suicide, “By the Time You Read This, I’ll Be Dead.” The magazine’s features editor, Emily Landau, accepted the prize. Said the judges: ‘A unique perspective on a topical subject, written in the first person, which forces us to rethink our prejudices about death. Courageous, touching and deeply human.’
