Condé Nast has lured Carol Smith from rival publisher Hachette Filipacchi Media to a newly created position overseeing the Bon Appétit and Gourmet brands. Paul Jowdy will give up his vp, publisher title and become executive director of sales for both brands, reporting to Smith.
Smith, who starts in April as vp, publishing director, was svp, chief brand officer of Elle. In her new role, she’ll report to Tom Florio, svp, publishing director.
The news comes as Condé Nast has been making moves to expand what remains of the Gourmet brand since folding its decades-old print magazine by the same name in October.
Condé Nast wouldn’t disclose how it plans to expand Gourmet’s assets, but the title had been looking into ideas like branded kitchen appliances, cookware and wine-themed trips before it folded. The magazine had expanded to the Gourmet Institute cooking school, cookbooks and its Diary of a Foodie TV show on PBS in recent years.
