The Readers Digest Association-owned classroom-magazine publisher, the nonprofit aimed at creating safe social climates for teenagers, and the social network, respectively, are teaming up to present William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing via posts, status updates, comments, links, and video, over a three-day period beginning April 26, to mark the playwright’s birthday and create awareness about cyberbullying.
Flocabulary will also contribute an animated hip-hop video to the cause, and students from the White Plains High School drama club will help to present the play.
Much Ado About Nothing can be followed by Liking the READ Magazine Facebook page, as well as by Liking the characters via the website Weekly Reader set up for the project (link above). The Ophelia Project will also update its Facebook page during the performance, including information on socially aggressive behavior demonstrated by the characters.
Weekly Reader senior vice president of editorial Ira Wolfman said:
We’re excited to present a 16th-century play in a 21st-century medium to explore the age-old topic of bullying. We hope teachers, students, and parents will join us in creating this modern, groundbreaking production.
The Ophelia Project program coordinator Jessica Semler added:
Cyberbullying is a serious issue for today’s youth, so we’re very excited to bring this message into their territory and language. From a literary standpoint, it is great to show how relevant and spot-on Shakespeare still is.
