'David After Dentist' Dad Turns YouTube Hit Into Big Business

Over 55 million people have laughed out loud as 7-year old David dazedly asks his dad, “Is this real life?” after a trip to the dentist and a dose of what appears to be some very good drugs. ‘David After Dentist’, which was posted at the end of 2009, was an instant hit, garnering over three million views in the first few days alone. However, the real success came when David’s father turned this simple video of his son into a business that is already worth over $100,000.

According to Monica Hesse of The Washington Post, David DeVore left his job in Orlando real estate to focus on turning his son’s YouTube sensation into a business. When he saw the success of the ‘David After Dentist’ video in the months after he posted it to YouTube he recognized the potential for monetization and decided to go into business. He started a website, opened up shop in the family’s spare bedroom and it’s been all uphill from there.

At DavidAfterDentist.com, fans of the video can watch the video and parodies of the video, read about how the video came to be, and most importantly buy merchandise. The online shop has shipped t-shirts and stickers featuring the face of young David and the words “Is this real life?” to 20 countries around the world. The profits from the online merchandise, paired with licensing deals and an ad partnership with YouTube have already surpassed $100,000. About $6,000 has gone to Operation Smile, a children’s charity, and the money will also go towards young David’s college fund.

Who would have thought that a dad posting a video of his son after the dentist could turn into a great business opportunity within a few short months? This is a truly remarkable example of just how much can come of a simple YouTube video. Aside from the huge number of views and the success of their online shop, the DeVore family was invited to be on the Today Show, Bill O’Reilly, the Tyra Banks Show and other television and radio shows and David has become a little celebrity.

The DeVore’s really hit the jackpot with this video, and their success is bound to spawn hundreds of copy-cat parents into posting videos of their own children and crossing their fingers for the same type of success.
