Donald Trump Boosts Mad Magazine Sales, Clicks

A double-edged golden goose.

Fast Company contributor Susan Karlin checked in with the gang at Mad magazine to ascertain whether President-elect Donald Trump has made American goofing great again. Yes and no.

Print sales for a 2015 issue with Trump on the cover were double the normal run. And in June of this year, same. But as Mad editor John Ficarra explains, it’s a double-edged golden goose:

“We’re sick of Trump, but he just keeps giving us material,” says Ficarra. “There’s such Trump fatigue in New York, we were consciously trying to find a way not to put him on the [latest] cover.” His staff found a work-around by depicting a nauseous [Alfred] Neuman throwing up in a Trump “Make America Great Again” cap. “Next time, we might have Alfred holding a sign that says, ‘No Trump in this issue—except pages 6, 12, 16, 18 . . .'”

Ficarra was also especially pleased with one particular aspect of the recent Fox News Trump Tower tour hosted by Harvey Levin. Mad’s year-end issue hits newsstands today.
