Editorial Cartoonists Think “Everyone Draw Muhammad Day” Is Probably A Terrible Idea

Happy “Everyone Draw Muhammad Day,” everyone. Apparently. Today’s “holiday,” which was, of course, spearheaded via a Facebook campaign, is proving to be less than popular with political cartoonists.

Sacramento Bee cartoonist and president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists Rex Babin articulates many cartoonists’ trepidation over the social media-inspired campaign:

I would be opposed to our organization getting behind such an ‘event’ because… something like that can be too easily co-opted by interest groups [whose agenda can go] beyond a simple defense of free expression.

The campaign was prompted, say its creators, by recent threats from fringe Muslim groups aimed at South Park‘s creators after the show depicted the prophet Muhammad in an episode.
