Holidays Were Facebook, Instagram Hot Topics for May: Memorial Day, Cinco de Mayo

The Kentucky Derby and the death of musician Chris Cornell also spurred discussion

Memorial Day and Cinco de Mayo were Hot Topics on Facebook and Instagram in May, with other holidays and special events drawing buzz, as well: Father’s Day and graduations on Facebook, and Star Wars Day and graduations on Instagram, according to Facebook IQ.

On the sports side, the Kentucky Derby heated up both Facebook and Instagram, but Facebook users engaged in far more discussion about the National Basketball Association—specifically the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs and LeBron James—while soccer (specifically the UEFA Champions League and C.D. Guadalajara) and the death of motorcycle racer Nicky Hayden sparked conversations on Instagram.

The death of musician Chris Cornell was a hot topic of discussion across Facebook and Instagram, with Facebook users also generating conversations about the passing of another music legend, Gregg Allman.

Facebook and Instagram went in different directions when it came to brands being discussed in May, with Instagram users talking about luxury brands including Birkin Bag and Chopard, while Facebook users posted about charitable organizations Comic Relief and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, as well as Bitcoin.

And Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, House of Cards and the new Baywatch movie were hot entertainment topics on Instagram in May, while Facebook users anxiously awaited the new season of Game of Thrones.

Facebook IQ measured subjects that drove disproportionately high volumes of discussion on both social platforms, marking the latest in a Facebook-Adweek Hot Topics monthly series that began in 2015.
