A total solar eclipse is set to hit America Aug. 21, and conversation on Facebook about the moon blocking the sun made the Great American Eclipse one of Facebook IQ’s Topics to Watch for the month of June.
American eclipse and topics associated with it saw conversation in June surge 32.6 times year over year and 1.3 times from May, driven largely by Facebook users 50 and older.
Cananga odorata, a plant used in the manufacture of perfumes and fragrances, and related topics saw a more modest year-over-year growth of 3.2 times and month-over-month growth of 0.6 times, with older women powering its rise.
Facebook users were hungry for Chinese food in June, particularly chicken feet, which (along with related topics) experienced growth of 1.9 times compared with June 2016 and doubled conversation volume from the previous month. Conversation growth was consistent across all age groups.
Conversations about deep learning, a favorite topic of Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and related topics including artificial intelligence were up 2.9 times year over year and 1.1 times month over month, led by men between the ages of 35 and 49.
Women 34 and under drove year-over-year conversation growth of 1.9 times and a month-over-month rise of 1.3 times for jeans and related topics including denim.
Finally, it was safety first for bikers on Facebook in June, as conversation about motorcycle helmets surged 2.9 times year over year and 1.3 times compared with May, with men of all ages driving the topic.
