It was reported last August by AllThingsD that Facebook was testing an application enabling celebrities or their page administrators to monitor mentions on Facebook via mobile and respond to fans. Nearly one year later, the social network announced the introduction of Facebook Mentions, the latest app from its Facebook Creative Labs initiative.
Facebook Mentions is only available to U.S. users with verified pages, and only for iOS devices, with plans to expand its availability “in the coming months,” and the social network said in the Facebook for Business post announcing its release that the app enables public figures or their page admins to:
- See what fans are saying about you and join the conversation.
- Join popular conversations on Facebook and see the latest posts from people you follow.
- Get streamlined notifications about your posts, including mentions from other influencers or the media.
Product Manager Allison Swope added in the Newsroom post:
Nearly 800 million people are connected to public figures on Facebook, and interacting with athletes, musicians, actors and other influencers is an important part of their experience. From cheering on World Cup players to checking out updates from favorite celebrities, there are more than 1 billion interactions between public figures and their fans on Facebook every week.
We want to make these interactions even better.
Mentions is currently only available for people with verified pages in the U.S. We plan to roll out to more countries and verified profiles in the coming months. If you are an admin of a verified page, you can request access to Mentions directly. If you are a public figure, you can also download the iPhone app to request access.
