The reason you’ve been hearing so much about Facebook Live recently is that Facebook has spent millions enticing media outlets to use it.
This isn’t exactly news — we learned the social giant was paying media companies to use the streaming service back in April. However, the scope—140 contracts with celebrities and media outlets totaling $50 million—is a little surprising.
The biggest payouts went to BuzzFeed and The New York Times, each getting roughly $3 million. Technically, BuzzFeed was paid slightly more ($3.05 million to the Times’ $3.03 million). CNN wasn’t far behind BuzzFeed and the Times — it was paid $2.5 million to use Facebook Live.
One thing we still don’t know is which celebrity was paid the most to create Facebook Live content. It’s probably some “Internet celebrity” that we never heard of because we’re old.
