Facebook Sets Up Ad Design Shop in New York

Team to focus on ad products, tools

Let’s be honest. Unless a brand is promoting a particularly alluring image, Facebook ads aren’t that pretty. That might not remain the case. Facebook said on Tuesday it is setting up—and hiring for—a design team at its New York office and work with agencies and brands to build better ad products.

Facebook has historically based its roughly 90 designers at the company’s Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters to keep design in lockstep with engineering. But as advertising becomes increasingly important to the newly public company—and with Silicon Valley a country removed from the advertising-aesthetic expertise of Madison Avenue—it’s little wonder the social network would want a design team closer to its sales team and their clients.

“The ads design team overall has two primary areas of focus, and the New York design team will likely feed into both of them," emailed a Facebook rep. "One is to create amazing consumer advertising experiences—ones that feel native to the Facebook product and add a lot of value for the more than a billion people who use our products. The other focus area is creating tools for businesses to create, manage, and understand the impact of their presence on Facebook."

While it sounds like the New York team will design new ad units as well as refine the platforms that advertisers use to run them, the spokesperson declined to comment on the team's plans.
