Zynga has announced a new milestone for its holiday charity event in FarmVille, as the game’s players have come together to donate over $1 million for Feeding America. This figure translates to over 9 million meals for those in need, and it was earned in the game’s newest expansion farm, Holiday Lights.

Released specifically for the Feeding America charity event, the Holiday Lights farm sees players growing crops on a farm covered in lights, completing quests and meeting new characters, as has become the custom on new farms. Players can open presents scattered around their new land, and can complete a variety of other tasks with the help of friends.

According to a recent study of 10,000 FarmVille players, 60 percent of gamers say they have donated to charities through FarmVille in the past.

To date, FarmVille players have raised over $7 million for charities, with 32 percent of surveyed players saying they’ve learned more about important issues and causes thanks to these in-game promotions.

While the $1 million goal was quickly smashed by farmers, the Holiday Lights farm is still open to new players, with Zynga donating 100 percent of its share of the purchase price of supported in-game items. Zynga has released an infographic with more stats from the Holiday Lights charity campaign (below), and encourages FarmVille’s players to keep their generosity going through the purchase of items in its “Oh, What Fun!” campaign with Heifer International.

FarmVille is available to play for free on Facebook. The game has over 4.6 million monthly active players according to AppData, our tracking service for mobile and social apps and developers.
