Fast Company and The New Yorker Staffs Unionize

Majority of employees join in efforts

Staffs with two more publications decided to unionize, joining a host of other employees at publications who have opted to do the same in recent months.

At The New Yorker, almost 90 percent of the editorial staff decided to unionize with the NewsGuild of New York. And at Fast Company, an “overwhelming majority” of the 40-member editorial, social and photo staff voted to unionize with the Writers Guild of America, East.

The editorial staff at the Condé Nast title asked for voluntary recognition Wednesday in a letter to New Yorker editor David Remnick. A spokesperson for The New Yorker did not immediately return a request for comment.

“What sustains The New Yorker is the love and care its staff puts into the work,” said associate editor Sharan Shetty in a statement. “Protecting that culture is a shared responsibility, and we believe that a union helps us fulfill it, especially in an increasingly precarious industry. We’re excited to make our workplace stronger and to secure the future of this magazine.”

Mansueto Ventures’ Fast Company called on management to voluntarily recognize the guild as its bargaining representative. A spokesperson for Fast Company did not immediately return a request for comment.

“We welcome the editorial, social and photo staff of Fast Company to the powerful movement for collective bargaining in digital news,” Lowell Peterson, executive director of WGAE, said in a statement. “We are inspired by their talent and commitment to their work—and to building a voice on the job to address workplace issues.”

NewsGuild of New York is part of NewsGuild-CWA, which also represents The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, The New Republic and Mic.com.

WGAE also represents staff members at Talking Points Memo, Gizmodo Media Group, Vox Media, HuffPost, VICE, The Intercept, ThinkProgress, MTV News, Thrillist and Salon.
