When Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger dropped the bombshell news late last week that they were leaving the company, speculation turned to Adam Mosseri, the Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network’s vice president of product, as a potential successor. Today, the speculation was confirmed.

Mosseri will officially assume the role of head of Instagram, starting today. He will oversee all functions of its business and is tasked with recruiting new heads of engineering, product and operations.

The elevation of Mosseri is a logical step if reports of Systrom’s and Krieger’s frustrations with Facebook leadership are accurate, as he would be less likely to clash with top brass than someone who had spent more time with Instagram.

Mosseri joined Facebook as a product designer in July 2008, after spending roughly one year as a product designer and user interface engineer at communications integration platform TokBox.

He moved up through the ranks, becoming a product design manager in March 2009 and design director for mobile in February 2012, but he really made his mark overseeing Facebook’s News Feed as product management director from August 2012 through March 2016, and then as vp of product management through this past May.

Mosseri’s time leading News Feed is not looked upon fondly by many publishers, as constant changes to the social network’s algorithm decimated their organic reach on the platform.

Mosseri was shifted to vp of product at Instagram as part of Facebook’s massive reorganization in May.

Systrom and Krieger said in their announcement, “We are thrilled to hand over the reins to a product leader with a strong design background and a focus on craft and simplicity—as well as a deep understanding of the importance of community. These are the values and principles that have been essential to us at Instagram since the day we started, and we’re excited for Adam to carry them forward.”

Mosseri praised the two departing co-founders in an Instagram post, writing, “The impact of their work over the past eight years has been incredible. They built a product people love that brings joy and connection to so many lives. I’m humbled and excited about the opportunity to now lead the Instagram team. I want to thank them for trusting me to carry forward the values that they have established.”
