Nice column item from Dusty Saunders in the Denver Post on venerable 74-year-old sports journalist Frank Deford. One of the topics covered is the difference between Deford’s HBO Real Sports audience and the one that tunes in to his weekly “Sweetness and Light” public radio commentaries:
“The NPR series has given me an audience which is not necessarily completely involved in the sports world,” he said. “And it’s refreshing to hear what non-jocks and casual observers think about events and players.”
Deford’s next HBO report, premiering Tuesday, is timely. It’s a profile of Nik Wallenda, the man who just daredevil-ed across one of the world’s Seven Wonders.
Deford has been with Real Sports since the very beginning, 1995. He told Saunders that he is somewhat wearily currently working on the audio book version of his autobiography Over Time: My Life as a Sportswriter. FishbowlNY will definitely give that a listen when it becomes available.
