Media Colleagues Pay Tribute to Gary Lycan

The measure of Gary Lycan, a much loved and respected Southern California radio columnist, is all over the Orange County Register‘s Facebook page. After a courageous battle with cancer, Lycan passed away on Tuesday at the age of 68.

Here is just a sampling at press time of some of the comments left on Facebook in response to the paper’s sharing of the obituary piece by Peter Larsen:

Tim Conway Jr. (KFI AM 640 radio host): If it wasn’t for Gary always including me in his pieces, I would not be working on KFI today. He was the best friend radio could have ever asked for.

Nancy Luna (Register food reporter): I am so sad to hear this news. Gary wasn’t just a great reporter, he was a great selfless person. He was one of my biggest supporters. He had a knack for sending me a note of encouragement when I needed it the most. Despite his illness, he was still upbeat and positive. I admired him for that. Gary, you will be missed deeply. Rest in peace.

Larry Welborn (Register legal affairs reporter): Gary was a classy, gracious and kind man. I knew him for more than 40 years and I never heard him say a negative thing.

Craig Powers (vice president of operations, Cameron Broadcasting): Gary was always so kind to me while I was in Southern California radio at KIIS FM, KEZY FM and KIK FM. He wrote about the stations many times, especially during the big Country boom of the 90’s when I was at KIK FM battling KZLA. Gary was always on the phone with me, asking what was happening with our latest promotions… I’m so thankful I had the chance to know this very kind man that truly cared for radio like no other before him!

FishbowlLA picked up on Lycan’s byline many times, everything from the lastest local Arbitron ratings to his take on the end of Mark & Brian. He also once forwarded, without our knowledge, a FishbowlLA article to Tim Conway Jr., who read the piece out loud on the air that same night. RIP.
