Google Announces Android Video And Voice Chat, Along With A Twitter Puzzle Challenge

Confirming a leak earlier this week, Google today announced that Android 2.3.4 includes Google Talk voice and video chat. The Android 2.3.4 upgrade will be pushed over-the-air to Nexus S and Nexus One phones sometime during the next two weeks. While the Nexus One will also be getting the 2.3.4 upgrade, it will not include the voice and video chat, although it will include bug fixes.

Personally, what I am most happy to learn is that Android 2.3.4 will contain a fix to the problem I and many others are having with the Nexus S, where it becomes unusable, requiring me to pull the battery in order to make the phone functional. Since I first reported on this issue, several other people have reported having the same problem on Google’s support forums. Many people have sent their phones to Samsung for repair, only to have the phones returned with the problem not fixed. So far the only known fix is a complete motherboard replacement, although installing WakeTimer and configuring it keep CPU on, screen off, with no time out, appears to be a workaround.

After installing Android 2.3.4, Google Talk will function in a manner similar to how it works on PCs today. You will be able to see the friends who are online and available for a video or voice chat. Video chat will utilize the front-facing camera on the Nexus S, making it the second app after Fring, to take full advantage of that camera. You will be able to perform video and voice chats over 3G, 4G and WiFi networks. It does not appear that you will be able to make phone calls like you currently can with Google Talk on PCs.

In addition to announcing Android 2.3.4, Google also posted on their Twitter feed that they will be having another Twitter Puzzle Challenge. Ten people will win a Nexus S by solving the puzzles that Google will post on Twitter. To participate you will post your answer in reply to @googlenexus and the first puzzle will be posted at 6 AM PST on Friday, so be sure to follow @googlenexus to play.
