Google Buys Zagat

Iconic restaurant reviewer will add to search giant's local offerings

In its continuing quest for world domination, Google is putting its stamp on one of the few areas of daily life that it didn’t already seem to control: Your eating habits.

The company announced today on its official blog that it has acquired Zagat, purveyor of those iconic little maroon books that rate everything from hole-in-the wall restaurants to fine dining establishments on a 30-point scale.

According to Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president of Local, Maps and Location Services, “Zagat will be a cornerstone of our local offering,” providing Google with “a world-class team that has more experience in consumer based-surveys, recommendations and reviews than anyone else in the industry.”

So here's to the Google-ization of the beloved and charmingly old-school Zagat processscanning alphabetized restaurants, locating addresses, touching actual paper. Then again, you've probably just been using Yelp.
