Google Continuing its Path Away from Native Mobile Apps

As the iPhone breezes past the 200,000 apps mark, Google continues to move away from native apps by continuing to make their web interfaces more native app-like. The latest comes in the form of:

Google’s new look for mobile

This new look only applies to, as usual, Android and the iPhone. The new look consists on a menu that slides search results off screen when a menu bar drops down.

And, although it is not mentioned, Google Maps mobile looks a bit different too. You can see a screenshot I took on an iPhone with a long set of map options that you don’t see on the native Google Maps app on the iPhone. All this is probably to prepare for the possibility of:

1. Apple booting Google Maps off as the installed native apps in iPhone OS 4.0
2. The release of the first Chrome OS netbooks/smartbooks
