Google Hosting Hangout-a-Thon For #GivingTuesday

In partnership with Mashable and 24 charitable organizations, Google is hosting a 12-hour live stream via Hangouts to connect people worthy causes.

As the Thanksgiving food runs out, the Black Friday buzz wears off, and your mouse cools after Cyber Monday, spare a thought for those less fortunate. A charity project called #GivingTuesday aims to help people give to more charities easily during a busy time of year. At 9am EST tomorrow Google is looking to kick things off in a big way.

In partnership with Mashable and 24 nonprofits and charity organizations, Google is hosting a 12-hour live stream via Hangouts where the partnered organizations plan to connect people interested in giving with worthy causes. During the event, celebrities and representatives from various non-profit organizations will pitch their causes, and you can donate to your favorite cause as well.

Unicef, Charity Water, Save the Children, the Malala Fund and The Trevor Project will all be on hand to campaign for clean water and Philippine disaster relief, among many other efforts. Google has also implemented an in-hangout app called “Shoppable Hangouts” which will allow users to purchase products for themselves, with most of the proceeds going straight to charity.

Hucksley, an online store which usually donates 25 percent of its profits to charity, is teaming up with Sophia Bush, Google and Pencils of Promise to donate 100 percent of proceeds from purchases during the event toward helping build 25 schools in Guatemala.

Google is swinging a lot of its power behind philanthropic giving this year; it launched the “Google One Today” Android app in August. The app allows users to donate $1 to a variety of Kickstarter-style altruistic projects. While this initiative raises funds, its main purpose is to spread awareness about under served charities.

With good marketing, social media engagement, and a little luck, maybe this time next year we won’t be asking about how much we ate, or how much we bought this past weekend. Maybe we’ll be asking “So how much do you plan to donate on #GivingTuesday?”
