The beginning of Grantland’s end was Bill Simmons’s departure. Once he was gone, it seemed only a matter of time until Grantland would shut down or become something completely different. Now, as more talented staffers leave the site, the end of Grantland could be coming faster than anyone expected.
The latest departure is Grantland founding editorial director Dan Fierman, who is leaving the site to join MTV News in the same role. Sports Illustrated also reports that Grantland editors Sean Fennessey, Juliet Litman, Mallory Rubin, and Chris Ryan have all been hired by HBO to work on Simmons’s upcoming show. Grantland lost Wesley Morris to The New York Times last month.
That’s a lot of great writers and editors. How can ESPN possibly fill those big shoes? Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like there’s a plan to do that.
