A Print Magazine Cover With Embedded, Functioning Videos

The Empire magazine limited series of 5,000 is tied to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

There are 5,000 copies of this special limited-edition Empire magazine cover. The shipment went on sale today in the U.K. at supermarket chain Saintsburys and is surely close-to, if not already, gone.

In the spirit of the Harry Potter series and prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the cover features two daily newspaper “moving-image photos” just like in the films–a behind-the-scenes video and the Fantastic Beasts trailer. Harry Potter fansite Pottermore has more details:

Modeled on American wizarding paper The New York Ghost–the cover will be magically embedded with two moving videos. Readers can fully interact with the cover, press play on the videos and even charge it. Yep, really. …

“The cover is a double layer of card and inside is a video screen,” Empire magazine deputy editor Jonathan Pile explained. “Beneath the card are microchips and circuit boards, which lead to buttons that you press on and off, and they lead to two videos. The idea was obviously based on the Harry Potter universe. The video screen is like a moving picture on the front page of a newspaper.”

The U.K. issue price of ten pounds is equal to $12.15 U.S. As the video above explains, the cover is recharged by means of a USB cable port on the back!
