The rounds of musical chairs that have been anticipated at Condé Nast for some time now have begun in earnest, kicking off on Thursday and continuing today with a series of shuffles of some of the company's senior publishers.
Brides’ Carolyn Kremins, an ambitious publisher who shepherded the title’s recent conversion to a 313,707-circulation monthly from a bimonthly, was given the 811,754-circ Condé Nast Traveler.
Kremins is taking over from Chris Mitchell, who is himself taking over at the 939,067-circulation GQ. And current GQ publisher, Pete Hunsinger, is becoming president and publisher of Golf Digest Companies. Tom Bair, who is vice president and publishing director of Golf Digest, and Laura Sequenzia, Golf World publisher, will report to him.
Lucky’s Michelle Myers, a relative newcomer to Condé Nast, is expected to succeed Kremins at Brides, with Marcy Bloom, an associate publisher at GQ, taking over at Lucky.
The high-level shakeup began Thursday, when Brides editor Millie Martini Bratten was let go after 17 years in the job and 35 years at the company. She’s the latest longtime Condé Nast editor to be replaced in the past year or so, following Architectural Digest’s Paige Rense Noland and Barbara Fairchild of Bon Appétit.
For a long time, Condé Nast was dominated by flashy salesmen with outsized personalities; the publishers who've been promoted in this shuffle are, by contrast, seen internally as hard workers who have been aggressive in expanding their titles to other platforms and chasing nonprint revenue.
Or, as one insider put it: “The egomaniacs have been sucked out.”
Under Kremins, Brides has launched a series of vertical apps and White Hot Hope, a major bridal event. Mitchell has taken Traveler into e-commerce and single-topic apps. Hunsinger has expanded GQ digitally with its iPhone edition and e-commerce, through a partnership with private sale site Gilt Groupe.
