Next month the pink satin gown worn by Marilyn Monroe in the Howard Hawks film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is going up for auction. The Calabasas auction house Profiles in History estimates the selling price will be between $150,000 and $250,000. Totally worth the cabbage.
The dress, designed by William Travilla, was worn by Marilyn for the musical number “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” It’s possibly one of the most iconic musical numbers in film history, easily the most famous musical number performed by Monroe, and by far the most imitated – we’ve seen the likes of Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman and Barbie rip off her style.
If you haven’t seen Monroe perform “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” you should. Watch the video after the jump, or better yet, rent the movie.
